Botanical brewer Lowlander Beer made a long cherished dream come true: end of May they will launch a genever distilled from their Lowlander I.P.A.
In the 17th century, when ships full of exotic herbs and were shipped to Amsterdam, the Dutch started to distil liqueurs and genever at a large-scale. This is also an important part of Dutch brewing history: the “Lowlanders” started to brew beers with botanicals. So it is not surprising that Lowlander Beer, whose botanically brewed beers once again put the Lowlands on the map for beers full of flavour and character, joins hands with Wynand Fockink, the oldest, working liqueur and genever distillery in the Netherlands. The result is a unique I.P.A. genever; to our knowledge the very first ever.
The “kopstoot” is the most sophisticated way of enjoying a shot with a beer. This centuries old Dutch tradition goes like this: the bartender fills a tulip-shaped shot glass to the absolute brim with genever and pours a beer next to it. Then you bend over and slurp the top off the genever. That done, you follow with a sip of beer.
Lowlander Beer has started to create a modern interpretation of this traditional Dutch ritual, combining the finest genevers with the best of Lowlander craft beer. So now it is time for the next step: their very own I. P.A. genever. Lowlander’s I.P.A. is a smooth 6% I.P.A. with fruity citrus notes and a perfect balance between hops and herbs. Brewed with coriander seed – for fresh citrus and spice – and white tea – for aromatic sweetness and a fine aftertaste. The beer is distilled into a refined, clear 38% genever with a fresh, hoppy and slightly bitter aroma, after which it is blended with a distilled malt base of wheat and juniper.
The result? A limited edition I.P.A. gin with a floral, slightly citrus-like and subtly sweet taste, but also clear notes of malt, hops and juniper. Quite a special flavour experience next to a glass of Lowlander I.P.A .; the genever and beer reinforce each other and complement each other perfectly.
The limited edition I.P.A. gin will be available in the planned Lowlander webshop from the end of May in a 700ml bottle as well as a head butt gift pack with 200ml I.P.A. genever, two bottles of Lowlander I.P.A., a beer- and traditional tulip glass.
